Functional Medicine -The Science of Creating Health
Functional medicine seeks to identify and correct underlying mechanisms that can lead to dysfunction resulting in very common health issues such as digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, weight gain or loss, depression and chronic infections instead of just treating the symptoms
Address the cause not the symptom
The primary mechanisms that can lead to disease are as follows:
- Hormone imbalances –HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis dysregulation aka adrenal fatigue, hormones that regulate blood sugar, thyroid hormone balance, sex hormone imbalances in both men and women
- Gut dysfunction – SIBO, altered gut permeability aka leaky gut, low stomach acid, H Pylori infection, poor digestive enzyme production, malabsorption, parasites, bacterial and fungal overgrowth, food intolerances
- Immune dysregulation (inflammation, auto immune disease)
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Chronic Infections
- Toxic Overload
- Genetic mutations known as polymorphisms or SNP’s
THE FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE TREE
The Functional Medicine Tree is an explanatory tool that helps explain the key differences between Functional Medicine and conventional medicine. The leaves and branches represent symptoms and diseases, which conventional medicine focuses on to arrive at a named diagnosis, with each specialty isolated on its own branch.
Functional Medicine instead focuses on the foundations of the tree, which represent the foundations of health, to understand the true “root” causes of dysfunction.

I use functional lab testing to identify malfunctions within these systems and exact test recommendations depend on the outcome of the comprehensive health and lifestyle history that is taken during your initial case review
Symptoms are still important to assess as they can give clues as to which underlying body system may be imbalanced and giving rise to your particular health issue.
More information about testing can be found on the Functional Lab Tests page.
